To begin the lesson, students will be broken up into three groups and given a queston to answer using 3 bullet points, they will have about 5 minutes to discuss. Then I will give them a picture and give them 5 minutes add to their bullet points. Once these are complete, students will then report back to the class group by group. As the students are talking, I will put all the bullet points on the board as we discuss them and go over the answers with them. Then we will watch a movie clip and take the quiz at the end together. The students will have to right down 5 bullet points throughout the movie so they have something to watch for. Students will also be given an assigment that is due on Friday that they will have to find a genetics current event and write a summary about it and they will present it to the class.
Objectives:
Students will be able to know what DNA is
Students will be able to define nuclec acid
Students will be able to explain why DNA is important
Students will be able to identify where DNA is stored
I will open by telling the students we are starting a genetics unit and ask what they think genetics is. I will write their answers at the top of the board as well as the agenda for the class period. Then, I will break the students into 3 groups. I know there are 9 students in the class, so 3 groups of 3. I will hand each group a question and ask them to put at least 3 bullet points in their logbooks. When they are done, I will hand each group a picture that depicts the question that they were previously given and see if they can add more bullet points to what they have already. Once they are done, one group representative will say thier question, another will hold up the picture and the third person will give us their bullet points that they came up will. As they are doing this, I will write the bullet points (proor knowledge) on the board for them to copy down in their logbooks. (20 mins)
Learning Activities:
I will keep everything on the board and we will watch a movie clip about DNA. At the end of the movie, there is a short quiz that the kids will take write in their note books. (20 mins)
Closing:
I will reiterate the three questions and wrap up what we started off class with and I will tell them to hand in their quizzes and give them their homework assignment. I will also hand out the current events homework that is due on Friday.
Assessment:
The quiz from the video. It is 10 questions. Will be graded based on 10 points.
Homework:
Questions to be completed in logbooks that I will post on the board for students to copy:
Is DNA the same as Chromosomes?
What are the three main parts of a DNA ladder? Draw and label it.
